Your employment evidence must show comprehensive event planning including client consultation, budget management, vendor coordination, and logistics oversight.
For a successful outcome, provide detailed reference letters supported by event documentation showing your direct involvement in organizing conferences and events.

Qualifications in related fields without event management subjects may not be accepted as highly relevant. Your transcripts must show clear event or conference management components.
VETASSESS Group C Assessment Criteria
VETASSESS assesses both your qualification level and field relevance.
| Factor | Description |
| Qualification Level | Must be AQF Diploma or higher |
| Field Relevance | Must focus on Event Management or have sufficient event management units |
| Employment Duration | The length of your post-qualification experience |

Highly Relevant: Directly related to organizing conferences, events, functions, banquets and seminars.
Appropriate Skill Level: Performed at a professional level with comprehensive coordination responsibility.
Recent Experience: At least some qualifying work undertaken within the last five years.

VETASSESS Employment Pathways
There are four main pathways to meet the criteria:
Pathway A: Have a highly relevant Diploma or higher (in Event Management or with sufficient event management units) plus at least 1 year of relevant post-qualification work in the last five years.

Important Note on Pre-Qualification Employment: If employment is prior to completing the qualification at the required level, you must have at least 1 year of highly relevant employment at appropriate skill level within the last five years. The remaining 3 years of pre-qualifying period may be within the last ten years.
Event Organization Career Progression
VETASSESS recognizes typical career progression in event management:
Entry Level: Assistant to Event Coordinator
Mid Level: Event Manager
Senior Level: Senior Event Manager
In line with ANZSCO, managerial duties are expected when nominating Conference and Event Organiser. Your employment evidence should reflect coordination and management responsibilities, not just administrative support.
Important Distinction: Event Coordination vs Event Sales or Support
VETASSESS requires evidence of comprehensive event organization. If your role focuses solely on:

- Administrative assistance without planning responsibility
- Venue operations management only
Accepted:
- Planning and organizing complete events from start to finish
- Managing event budgets and vendor relationships

- Client consultation and event solution development
Your evidence must clearly show event planning and coordination, not just sales or administrative support.

Migration Pathways for Conference and Event Organiser (ANZSCO 149311)
After a positive VETASSESS assessment, you can apply for several skilled migration visas.
Conference and Event Organiser (149311) is listed on the Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL). This provides access to certain visa pathways.
Available Visa Pathways
Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190): This permanent residence visa requires state or territory nomination. It adds 5 points to your total score. You must meet both federal and state-specific requirements.
Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 491): This 5-year provisional visa is for those nominated by a state or territory government for regional areas. It adds 15 points to your score and provides a pathway to permanent residence through Subclass 191.
Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional Visa (Subclass 494): This 5-year provisional visa is for regional employer sponsorship. It provides a pathway to permanent residence through Subclass 191 after meeting residence and income requirements.
Training Visa (Subclass 407): This temporary visa allows participation in workplace-based training for up to 2 years. It does not lead directly to permanent residence.
State and Territory Nomination
Several states include Conference and Event Organiser on their occupation lists. However, requirements vary significantly:
Availability: State nomination availability changes regularly based on tourism and events industry needs.
Additional Requirements: Many states require you to already live or work in the state, have a job offer in event management, or meet specific criteria.
Priority Allocation: Some states prioritize this occupation for regions with growing tourism and events sectors.
Always check current state and territory government websites for the latest occupation lists and nomination criteria before applying.
Key Migration Requirements
Regardless of pathway, you must:
Age: Be under 45 years of age at time of invitation (some exceptions may apply).
Skills Assessment: Hold a valid and positive skills assessment from VETASSESS.
Health and Character: Meet health and character requirements for all applicants and dependents.
Important Notes
A positive skills assessment is essential but does not guarantee a visa. Success depends on your points score (for 190/491), state nomination availability, occupation demand, employer sponsorship opportunities (for 494), and individual circumstances.
Since this occupation is on STSOL only, it is not eligible for Subclass 482 (Skills in Demand) – Specialist Skills stream or Subclass 186 (Employer Nomination Scheme) without transitioning from eligible temporary visas.
Consulting a MARA registered migration agent at Think Higher Consultants can help you navigate the complex visa process and identify the best pathway for your event management background.
Common Reasons Conference and Event Organiser Skills Assessment Gets Refused
Many Conference and Event Organiser (ANZSCO 149311) skills assessments receive negative outcomes. Understanding common pitfalls helps you avoid mistakes.
Role Focused on Sales or Administration, Not Coordination
The top reason for refusal is evidence showing event sales or administrative support rather than comprehensive event coordination. If your reference letters emphasize:
- Selling event venues or banquet facilities
- Event venue sales management
- Administrative support for events without planning responsibility
- Venue operations management
VETASSESS will find you not suitable for this occupation. Your role must focus on planning and organizing complete events, not just sales or support.
Insufficient Event Management Evidence
Another common issue is lack of clear event coordination evidence. Refusals happen when:
No Direct Coordination: Letters don’t demonstrate hands-on event planning and execution.
Limited Scope: Only involved in one aspect of events (e.g., just registration or just catering coordination).
No Budget Management: Missing evidence of financial planning and cost management.
No Vendor Coordination: Unable to show management of multiple suppliers and service providers.
Your evidence must demonstrate comprehensive event organization from concept to completion.
Qualification Without Event Management Focus
VETASSESS requires Event Management qualifications or related degrees with sufficient event management units. Applications fail when:
No Event Units: Hospitality, Marketing, or Communications degrees without event or conference management subjects.
Insufficient Coverage: Only 1-2 event-related units in a degree program.
Unrelated Field: Qualifications in business, administration, or other fields without event management components.
Below Diploma Level: Certificate III or lower qualifications are insufficient.
Bachelor degrees in Hospitality, Marketing, Media, Communications or Public Relations must have sufficient units in Events or Conference Management. Your transcripts must clearly show this.
Missing Events List Template
The Events List Template is mandatory for this occupation. Refusals occur when:
Template Not Submitted: Applicants fail to complete and submit the required template.
Insufficient Events: Fewer than 3 events listed from the past 5 years.
Vague Event Details: Missing information about event scope, objectives, or your specific role.
No Supporting Evidence: Events listed but no documentation provided to verify them.
This template is critical for demonstrating your hands-on event coordination experience.
Insufficient Employment Evidence
VETASSESS focuses heavily on employment proof. Refusals are common when:
Vague Reference Letters: Generic event descriptions without specific coordination details.
Missing Key Duties: No mention of budget management, vendor coordination, or logistics planning.
Sales Emphasis: Letters focus on selling event services rather than organizing them.
No Event Examples: Unable to identify specific events organized.
Reference letters must explicitly describe comprehensive event planning and coordination activities.
Employment Not Within Last Five Years
VETASSESS requires qualifying employment within the last five years. Common mistakes:
All Experience Too Old: Your most recent event coordination work was more than 5 years ago.
Recent Work Not Relevant: Current role doesn’t involve event organization.
Career Breaks: Extended gaps mean recent experience doesn’t meet requirements.
At least the qualifying portion of your experience must be within the five-year period before application.
Insufficient Event Scope
VETASSESS expects professional-level event coordination. Refusals occur when:
Only Small Events: Experience limited to small-scale gatherings without complexity.
No Multi-Service Coordination: Events didn’t require coordinating venues, catering, audio-visual, transport, accommodation.
Limited Budget Responsibility: No evidence of managing event budgets.
No Client Consultation: Missing evidence of working with clients to develop event solutions.
Your event examples should demonstrate professional-level coordination with multiple service providers and reasonable budget scope.
Pathway Misunderstanding
Common pathway errors include:
Wrong Experience Count: Not calculating post-qualification years correctly.
Pre-Qualification Issues: For Pathway D, not meeting the 4-year total requirement correctly.
Certificate IV Relevance: For Pathway B, additional qualification not in Event Management.
Ensure you understand which pathway applies to your qualification and experience profile.
Documents in Wrong Format
Technical issues also cause problems:
- Poor-quality scans
- Missing certifications
- Documents not translated by accredited translators
- Incomplete transcripts not showing event management subjects
- The events list template is not completed properly
Always follow VETASSESS document guidelines exactly.
