How much work experience is required?
The required work experience depends on your assessment pathway:
Pathway 1: 1 year with highly relevant Diploma or higher in Hospitality/Hotel Management Pathway 2: 1 year with non-relevant Diploma plus Diploma in Hospitality Management Pathway 3: 2 years with non-relevant Diploma or higher Pathway 4: 4 years total (3 years relevant + 1 year recent highly relevant)
All employment must be post-qualification, managing all hotel/motel divisions, at managerial level, and at least 20 hours per week.
Is an organisational chart mandatory for this occupation?
Yes. As Hotel or Motel Manager is a managerial occupation, applicants nominating this occupation must submit an organisational chart.
The chart must show:
- Your position managing multiple departments
- All divisions you oversee (housekeeping, F&B, security, accounting)
- Reporting relationships across the hotel/motel
If unable to obtain a chart, provide a statutory declaration explaining the structure and reasons.
What is the caveat for Subclass 482 and 186 visas?
According to the Department of Home Affairs, this occupation excludes any position that predominantly involves responsibility for low-skilled tasks.
Excluded low-skilled tasks:
- Rostering, maintaining records, reception duties, allocating duties to housekeepers/porters
- Fruit picking or packing
- Truck driving
Your nominated position must involve genuine managerial responsibilities across all hotel operations. This caveat does NOT apply to Subclass 190, 491, or 494.
Can Bed and Breakfast operators apply under this occupation?
No. Bed and Breakfast operators are classified under Accommodation and Hospitality Managers nec (ANZSCO 141999), not Hotel or Motel Manager.
Hotel or Motel Manager is for commercial hotels and motels that provide guest accommodation as the primary business with multiple operational divisions.
What is the difference between Hotel or Motel Manager and Hotel Service Manager?
Hotel or Motel Manager (141311): Manages ALL divisions and aspects of hotel/motel operations including housekeeping, security, food & beverage, accounting. Overall operational control.
Hotel Service Manager (431411): Manages hotel service staff in specific departments. Does not have overall operational authority across all divisions. Lower skill level.
If your role is restricted to front office or specific department management, apply under Hotel Service Manager.
Can serviced apartment managers apply under this occupation?
Yes, but only if you are responsible for ALL aspects of the serviced apartment’s operation.
You must also demonstrate knowledge and experience with body corporate legislation when applicable.
If your serviced apartment role has limited scope, you may be better suited to Accommodation and Hospitality Managers nec (141999).
What type of establishment qualifies as a hotel or motel?
A hotel or motel is a commercial establishment that:
- Provides guest accommodation as the PRIMARY business
- Offers meals and other services for patrons
- Has staff categorized among different service provisions (housekeeping, grounds/maintenance, food & beverage, reception/concierge)
Establishments where food and beverage is the primary business (restaurants, pubs without substantial accommodation) do not qualify.
How long is a VETASSESS skills assessment valid?
A VETASSESS skills assessment is typically valid for 3 years from the date of issue.
For state nomination and visa applications, check specific validity requirements with the state government and Department of Home Affairs. Some pathways may require more recent assessments.
What happens if I receive a negative outcome?
If you receive a Not Suitable outcome, you can:
Request a Review: If you believe there was an error. Additional fee applies.
Submit Reassessment: Provide additional evidence addressing issues identified, particularly clarifying overall management vs department management. Additional fee applies.
Apply Under Different Occupation: If your experience better fits another ANZSCO code (such as Hotel Service Manager 431411 or Accommodation and Hospitality Managers nec 141999).
