What is a Professional Year Program?
Also known as a job preparedness program, professional year program is designed to equip foreign students with the necessary skills they need to adjust in a new work environment. The program focuses on how one can adapt to an Australian workplace owing to its unique cultural setting.
These soft skills are important and allow students to overcome any barriers or hurdles they might experience after completing their education in Australia. Here’s what the program caters to:
- Improves communication skills, allowing candidates to swiftly participate and communicate in an Australian work environment.
- Equips students with necessary industry-specific skills to perform better than their peers and colleagues.
- Provides students with the insight and knowledge about Australian work culture. This enables students to comfortably mingle with their peers.
- Includes an internship that helps students familiarize their new work environment and what they should expect in the future.
Who is Eligible for an Australian Professional Year Program?
Here are a couple of things you should know about before applying for the program:
For starters, students must have undertaken study in Australian by graduating from an undergrad or postgraduate degree program. Candidates must have a degree in one of the following disciplines:
- Computer science
Aside from educational qualifications, students must also meet certain visa requirements. First off, candidates must hold or have applied for a Skilled, Graduate (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 485). While candidates can also be on a Student or Bridging Visa, it is necessary you apply for a 485 visa. All 485 visa holders must ensure their visa is valid until the completion of their Professional Year Program.
Holding a 485 visa will allow you to continue living in Australia for 18 months until you have completed your degree. In order to be eligible for this visa, candidates must have secured an eligible qualification within the last six months. All candidates must also have necessary qualifications and skills for their required occupation in lieu of the Skilled Occupation List.
In addition, engineering students who have obtained a degree in a recognized university outside Australia can also apply for a Professional Year Program in engineering. However, to initiate the process, they must apply for a Temporary Subclass 476 Visa.
English Language Proficiency
Needless to say, candidates must display language proficiency by having an overall minimum IELTS test score of 6.0.
As part of the process, candidates must be completed skill assessment from relevant assessing bodies: IPA, CPA, ACS, ICAA and EE.
