PTE Comparison to IELTS

Posted on : February 11, 2021 12:18 pm

PTE and IELTS are two test formats use to evaluate your English language proficiency. It has been a debate about which one is better. Let’s discuss our PTE Comparison to IELTS. PTE stands for The Pearson Test of English. It was founded in 2009 and it got famous worldwide because of its flexibility and fast results. It is applicable in Australia, UK, and many countries. This test is also one of the important formats and uses to test the proficiency of the English language.

IELTS is (The International English Language Training System) is the test format used to evaluate the proficiency of the English Language for non-native speakers. It was founded in 1989 and it is conducted by Cambridge English Language Assessment, British Council, and IDP education

The test structure for PTE and IELTS is the same. They both are divided into four sections: listening, speaking, writing, and reading.

Structure

But there is a difference in their exam criteria. For example: In IELTS, a speaking test is conducted by a human and you have to make conversation with him/her, and your conversation is also recorded.

PTE test is conducted on the computer. In PTE, your speaking test is conducted by using the microphone in front of a computer and gets recorded at the same time.

Technology

PTE is a completely computer-based test. Every module is tested by an artificially intelligent algorithm. Speaking is also tested by an algorithm.

IELTS is based on papers by using diagrams, graphs. Speaking is tested by a human invigilator which sometimes a disadvantage for the candidate because human involvement sometimes makes things biased.

Duration

PTE has fixed time for each section while IELTS has slotted time for all sections. In IELTS, candidates can go both backward and forward but in PTE, candidates can go only forward.

Scoring

IELTS uses manual scoring methods. Each module has its score and is not dependent on one another.

While PTE has automated scoring methods. Your score is marked by artificial intelligence based algorithm. In PTE, test modules are dependent on each other. For example, Read-Aloud questions are considered in both the speaking and reading sections.

Result

PTE results are available to the candidates in five working days and it is evaluated from bands 10-90. PTE result is divided into two parts enabling skills and communicative skills.

While IELTS is evaluated in the bands of 0-9 and the papers are checked manually by the humans. You have to make conversation with humans so there are possibilities of making errors. IELTS results are available in 13 days.

Conclusion

If we sum up all the researches and our experts’ advice, we say that PTE is so far more reliable and easy test to perform compared to IELTS. You can score straight 90 bands in PTE but it is impossible to gain 9 bands in IELTS. So which one is best? The answer is PTE.
