AASW Skills Assessment

AASW Skills Assessment Overview

The Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) is the government-approved assessing authority for the social work profession in Australia. The Migration & Eligibility Assessment evaluates overseas social work qualifications (and accredited Australian qualifications for certain visas) against the Australian Social Work Education and Accreditation Standards (ASWEAS). A positive skills assessment is required for social workers seeking recognition for skilled migration purposes.

AASW Migration & Eligibility Assessment

How the AASW assesses social work qualifications and experience for migration and employment purposes.

Why it Matters

  • Mandatory for migration applications where social work is the nominated occupation.
  • Ensures qualifications meet Australian professional standards for practice.
  • Provides an official outcome letter usable for visa applications and/or AASW membership eligibility.
  • Highly regarded for employment in Australia’s social services sector.

Assessment Scope

  • Assesses social work qualifications for migration purposes against ASWEAS criteria.
  • Covers international qualifications and AASW-accredited Australian social work programs (including for international students).
  • Includes assessment of field education (practical placements).
  • Optional add-ons: Skilled Employment Assessment (post-qualifying experience) and Doctorate Degree Assessment.
  • Supports skilled migration visa pathways (e.g., 189, 190, 491 and others).

The AASW conducts a document-based assessment of your social work qualification, field education, and English language proficiency (where required). Applications are assessed individually against specific criteria, including proof of identity, qualification comparability, and supervised field placements. Optional skilled employment assessment is available after a successful qualification assessment for those claiming points for post-qualifying experience.

AASW Assessment Process

Follow the official online process for your qualification assessment.

Step 1: Check Eligibility & Prepare

Review the AASW criteria and guidelines for international qualification recognition. Confirm your qualification is a dedicated social work degree and gather evidence of field education (at least 1000 hours across two placements with contrasting foci, one in direct practice).

Step 2: English Language Requirements

Demonstrate high-level English proficiency as per the AASW English language policy. Applicants must achieve an IELTS Academic overall score of 7.0 with a minimum of 7.0 in each band (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking). Scores can be combined across two test sittings within six months, provided no component score falls below 6.5. Check exemption criteria for eligible applicants.

Step 3: Submit Online Application

Create/log in to the AASW portal. Complete the application form, upload high-quality documents, and pay the fee. You can apply for qualification assessment alone or include optional skilled employment/doctorate assessments.

Step 4: Assessment & Outcome

AASW reviews your documents (may verify directly with your institution). Receive the outcome via the portal. A positive migration skills assessment letter is valid for 3 years. If further information is requested, respond promptly.
