VETASSESS Skills Assessment
Assess Your Professional & Trade Skills for Australian Migration
Stop Mixing Pathways. First, Identify Whether Your Case Is Professional, Trade, DAMA, 485 or Employer-Sponsored.
VETASSESS is one of Australia’s major skills assessment authorities. It assesses qualifications and employment evidence for many professional occupations and selected trade skills for Australian migration purposes.
This page separates the information into clear pathways so applicants can understand where they fit, what documents are required and what risks can affect the outcome.
Quick Pathway Finder
Professional and Trade Assessments Are Not the Same Thing.
The biggest problem with the old page was that professional occupation information and trade information were sitting together without a clear hierarchy. This layout separates the routes so applicants can immediately recognise their pathway.
Professional Occupations
For non-trade occupations where VETASSESS compares qualifications with the Australian Qualifications Framework and checks employment relevance to the nominated occupation.
- Common fields: marketing, HR, management, science, policy, admin and other professional roles.
- Typical visa links: 189, 190, 491, 482, 186, 485 and DAMA where applicable.
- Main risk: duties, qualification major and employment evidence not matching the nominated occupation.
Trade Occupations
For selected trade occupations where VETASSESS may assess documentary evidence, technical knowledge and/or practical capability depending on the pathway and occupation.
- Common fields: electrician, plumber, carpenter, chef, hairdresser, automotive, HVAC and welding.
- Pathway 1 generally applies when you do not hold an accepted Australian qualification or licence.
- Pathway 2 generally applies when you hold accepted Australian qualification or occupational licence evidence.
Full Skills Assessment
For professional and general occupations where both qualifications and employment are assessed against the nominated occupation.
Best for:- 189 / 190 / 491 migration planning
- Employer-sponsored and professional pathways
- Applicants claiming employment relevance
485 Qualifications-Only
For eligible Graduate visa applicants where the assessment focuses on qualification suitability rather than full employment evidence.
Best for:- Subclass 485 planning
- Recent graduates
- Qualification evidence review
DAMA / Labour Agreement
For regional or industry agreement pathways where assessment criteria, occupation access and processing may differ from standard migration routes.
Best for:- Regional employer pathways
- DAMA occupations
- Industry agreement planning
Trade Pathway 1 & 2
For selected trades requiring documentary evidence and potentially technical interview or practical assessment depending on the pathway.
Best for:- Trade occupations
- Offshore skills assessment
- TSS / employer-sponsored trade cases

Most Weak Applications Fail Before VETASSESS Even Reads the Full Story.
Applicants usually lose time because they nominate the wrong occupation, provide generic reference letters, submit duties that do not match ANZSCO, rely on unclear employment evidence or misunderstand the difference between professional and trade assessment pathways.
We Structure Your File Before You Pay and Submit.
Our team reviews your nominated occupation, qualification relevance, employment history, references, payslips, translation needs and visa strategy. The aim is simple: submit a file that makes sense to the assessor the first time.

VETASSESS Skills Assessment FAQs
VETASSESS Skills Assessment is an official process that evaluates your qualifications and work experience against Australian standards for your nominated occupation. It is required for many skilled migration visa pathways.
Applicants applying for skilled migration in occupations such as marketing, HR, management, science, and many trade roles may need a VETASSESS assessment before applying for a visa.
VETASSESS assesses more than 361 professional occupations and 27 trade occupations including chefs, electricians, plumbers, marketing specialists, HR professionals, and more.
You generally need relevant qualifications, work experience, identity documents, CV, employment references, and supporting evidence such as payslips and contracts.
Processing usually takes 7 to 10 weeks for professional occupations and 12 to 16 weeks for trade occupations depending on document verification and workload.
Fees typically start from AUD $1,096 for professional occupations and around AUD $406 for certain visa-specific assessments. Trade occupations have different fee structures.
Yes, some qualification-only assessments are available for certain visa pathways like subclass 485, but most occupations require relevant work experience.
If your assessment is negative, you may need to provide additional evidence, choose a more suitable occupation, or gain more relevant experience before reapplying.
English requirements depend on the occupation and visa pathway. Some assessments do not require English test results, but visa applications may still require them.
A positive assessment is usually valid for up to 3 years, allowing you to use it for your skilled migration visa application during that time.
