Medical Treatment Visa Subclass 602
The Medical Treatment Visa Subclass 602 allows eligible people to travel to or remain in Australia for medical treatment, a specialist consultation or organ donation. It may also be available to a family member or friend supporting a patient or organ donor.

Who Can Apply for a Medical Treatment Visa?
The visa may be available to a person who intends to:
- Receive medical treatment in Australia
- Attend a specialist medical consultation
- Donate an organ in Australia
- Receive an organ from a donor travelling with them
- Support a patient or organ donor holding this visa
There is no general age limit. Applicants under 18 may need additional consent, custody and identity documents. Medical treatment connected with surrogate motherhood is not eligible under this visa.
Medical Treatment Visa Requirements
Applicants must generally:
- Have confirmed treatment, consultation or organ-donation arrangements
- Intend to stay in Australia temporarily
- Have sufficient funds and approved arrangements for medical costs
- Meet health and character requirements
- In most cases, repay or formally arrange repayment of Australian Government debt
- Follow all visa conditions
- Leave Australia before the visa expires
- Not pose a public health or community safety risk

Confirmed Medical Arrangements Matter
Treatment and Hospital Evidence
The application should include a letter from the Australian doctor or hospital confirming:
- The applicant’s medical condition
- The proposed treatment or consultation
- The expected treatment period
- The estimated cost
- The medical provider responsible for the treatment
A general plan to seek treatment after arriving in Australia may not provide enough evidence. The medical arrangements should be confirmed before the application is lodged.
Financial Capacity and Medical Costs
There is no fixed minimum bank balance. Applicants must show enough funds for:
- Medical and hospital costs
- Travel expenses
- Accommodation and living costs
- Other stay-related expenses
- A support person or organ donor, where applicable
The doctor or hospital should confirm patient acceptance, treatment costs and payment arrangements.
For public hospital treatment, confirmation may also be required that the treatment will not create a public cost or disadvantage Australian patients.
Support Person
Medical Treatment Visa for a Support Person
A support person may be a family member, friend or another suitable person whose presence is needed by the patient or organ donor.
The support person generally lodges a separate application and provides evidence of:
- Their relationship with the patient or donor
- Why their support is required
- Their ability to fund the stay
The applications may be processed together. However, the patient or donor’s visa must be granted before the support person’s visa can be approved.
Location at Decision
Applying Inside or Outside Australia
You may lodge a Subclass 602 Medical Treatment Visa application from within Australia or overseas.
Applying in Australia
For an onshore application, you will usually need to be in Australia when the visa is decided.
Applying overseas
For an offshore application, you will generally need to remain outside Australia until a decision is made.
Onshore applicants should check their current visa conditions before lodging. Form 1507 may be required when applying in Australia without a substantive visa.

Subclass 602 Visa Conditions and Health Insurance
Private health insurance is strongly recommended because visa holders are generally responsible for their healthcare expenses in Australia. Cover for unexpected illness or complications is separate from the planned treatment arrangements.
Work is generally not permitted except in limited circumstances. Study or training is usually limited to three months, although an exemption may apply in specific cases.
The exact conditions should be checked in the visa grant notice or through VEVO.
Single or Multiple Entry
The visa may be granted with single-entry or multiple-entry permission.
A person holding a single-entry visa may not be able to return after leaving Australia. Multiple entry allows travel while the visa remains valid.

Medical Treatment Visa Fee
The visa is currently free when the application is lodged outside Australia. A visa application charge generally applies when applying from inside Australia, although limited concessions or exemptions may be available.

The Medical Treatment Visa cannot be extended. If more time is required for treatment, recovery or support, the applicant must apply for another suitable visa before the current visa expires.
A further Subclass 602 application may be possible if the requirements are still met. A No Further Stay condition may also restrict applications for certain other visas while the holder remains in Australia.
