Transit Visa Subclass 771

The Transit Visa Subclass 771 is for travellers who need to pass through Australia before continuing to another country. It is commonly required when an international journey includes a connecting flight from an Australian airport and the traveller must enter Australia during the transfer.

The visa generally allows a stay of up to 72 hours. It may be needed if you must clear immigration, collect baggage, change airports or leave the transit lounge.

Think Higher Consultants can assess whether you need an Australia Transit Visa, review your itinerary and guide you through the application process.

Who Needs a Transit Visa for Australia?

You may need a Subclass 771 visa when Australia is an intermediate stop on your journey to a third country and your travel arrangements require entry into Australia.

This may apply where you:

  • Have a connecting international flight departing from Australia
  • Need to collect and recheck baggage
  • Must clear immigration during the transfer
  • Need to change airports or terminals
  • Want to leave the airport during the layover
  • Have a stopover longer than eight hours
  • Do not qualify for Transit Without a Visa

Airport and baggage arrangements can affect whether a visa is required, so confirm them with the airline before applying.

Can You Transit Without a Visa?

Some passport holders may qualify for Transit Without a Visa (TWOV).

You must generally:

  • Arrive in Australia by aircraft
  • Hold an eligible passport or travel document
  • Have a confirmed flight to a third country within eight hours
  • Hold the documents required to enter that country
  • Remain in the airport transit lounge
  • Avoid clearing Australian immigration

You need an Australian visa if baggage collection, an overnight stay or an airport change requires immigration clearance.

Transit Visa Subclass 771 Requirements

Applicants must generally:

  • Be outside Australia when applying and when the decision is made
  • Be travelling through Australia to another country
  • Have confirmed onward travel within 72 hours
  • Hold a valid passport or travel document
  • Have permission to enter the destination country
  • Meet health, character and biometric requirements
  • Follow the visa conditions and Australian laws
  • Have paid or arranged to repay any Australian Government debt

Applicants under 18 may need parental consent or custody documents. Each traveller must lodge a separate application.

How Long Can You Stay?

Most Transit Visa holders can remain in Australia for no more than 72 hours.

You may stay in a hotel or briefly leave the airport, but transit must remain the main purpose and you must depart within the granted period.

Confirmed Onward Travel

The application must show genuine arrangements to continue from Australia to a third country.

Evidence may include:

  • Confirmed arrival and departure bookings
  • An onward flight within 72 hours
  • A destination-country visa or entry authority, where required
  • A clear itinerary linking both flights
  • Transfer or accommodation details, if leaving the airport

An unclear itinerary may delay the application.

Important Documents

Documents may include:

  • Valid passport and identity documents
  • Confirmed onward ticket
  • Destination-country entry documents
  • Airport-transfer or accommodation details
  • Parental consent for a child
  • Health, character or biometric documents, where requested
  • English translations of non-English documents

Maritime Crew Transit Visa

A maritime crew member flying into Australia to join an eligible ship generally needs a Maritime Crew Visa Subclass 988 and a Transit Visa Subclass 771, unless another visa permits entry by air.

The crew member must normally join the ship within five days and provide relevant employment, vessel and shipping-agent documents.

Transit Visa Conditions

The holder must:

  • Leave Australia within the permitted period
  • Use the visa only for genuine transit
  • Not work in Australia
  • Follow the grant conditions
  • Obey Australian laws

The visa cannot be extended. A Transit Visa grant may also cause most other Australian visas held by the applicant to cease, so check VEVO or ImmiAccount before applying.

Transit Visa Australia Cost

The Australian Government currently does not charge a visa application fee for the Subclass 771 Transit Visa.

Other expenses may apply for biometrics, medical checks, translations, insurance or professional assistance. Check current information before applying.

Transit Visa Australia Processing Time

Home Affairs does not guarantee a fixed processing time. Processing may depend on application completeness, identity checks, biometrics, character assessments and onward-flight evidence.

Apply well before departure and wait for the written visa decision before starting the journey.
