Australian Citizenship Guidance
Australian Citizenship Application Support
Australian citizenship is an important milestone for eligible permanent residents. However, applying involves more than submitting an online form.
Your permanent residence, travel history, identity documents and character information must be accurate and consistent. Applying too early, providing incorrect travel dates or submitting incomplete documents may delay the process.
Can You Apply For Australian Citizenship?
Most permanent residents apply for Australian citizenship through citizenship by conferral. Different requirements, exemptions or special provisions may apply depending on your age, visa history and personal circumstances.
- Hold Australian permanent residency or an eligible Special Category visa
- Have lived in Australia on a valid visa for four years
- Have held permanent residency for the final 12 months
- Meet the applicable overseas travel limits
- Satisfy the good-character requirement
- Pass the citizenship test, where required
- Intend to live in Australia or maintain a continuing connection with Australia
Australian Citizenship Pathways
Your pathway depends on how you may be eligible for citizenship or evidence of citizenship.
Citizenship By Conferral
The main pathway for eligible Australian permanent residents and certain New Zealand citizens. Applicants may need to meet residence, identity, character and knowledge requirements before attending a citizenship ceremony.
Citizenship By Descent
You may qualify if you were born outside Australia and one or both parents were Australian citizens when you were born. Evidence of birth, identity and parental citizenship is usually required.
Evidence Of Australian Citizenship
Some people are already Australian citizens but require an official citizenship certificate as proof, including where a previous certificate has been lost.
Resuming Australian Citizenship
A former Australian citizen may be able to resume citizenship in certain circumstances. Eligibility depends on how and when the previous citizenship ended.
Citizenship Residence Requirement
For citizenship by conferral, most applicants must generally have lived in Australia on a valid visa during the four years immediately before applying. You must usually have held permanent residency or an eligible Special Category visa during the final 12 months.
- No more than 12 months outside Australia during the four years before applying
- No more than 90 days overseas during the final 12 months
Australian Citizenship Test
Most applicants aged between 18 and 59 are required to complete the Australian citizenship test. The test contains 20 multiple-choice questions and examines your knowledge of Australia, its people, government, laws, rights and responsibilities.
To pass, applicants must generally score at least 75% overall and correctly answer all five questions about Australian values.
Good-Character Requirement
Applicants aged 18 or older must generally satisfy the good-character requirement. Having a criminal record does not automatically prevent citizenship, but all relevant matters must be declared accurately.
Police And Court Matters
Criminal convictions, pending charges, court appearances and good-behaviour bonds may need to be considered and declared.
Immigration History
Previous immigration concerns, false or misleading information, and visa history may affect the assessment.
Disclosure Accuracy
Failing to disclose information may create a more serious problem than the original matter.
Documents You May Need
Your documents should support your identity from birth to the present and remain consistent with the information provided in your application.
- Current and previous passports
- Full birth certificate
- National identity card
- Permanent visa details
- Proof of residential address
- Australian driver licence
- International travel history
- Marriage or name-change documents
- Citizenship photographs

- Police or court documents
