IML Skills Assessment

IML Skills Assessment Guide

The Institute of Managers and Leaders (IML) is the specialised assessing authority for senior-level management occupations in Australia. IML evaluates the strategic reach of your role, focusing on decision-making authority, budgetary control, organisational impact, and leadership at a senior level. For high-level executives and corporate managers, a positive IML assessment is often the key to receiving invitations for skilled migration visas such as Subclass 189, 190, or 491.

IML Assessment Essentials

To qualify as a senior manager under IML criteria, your application must clearly demonstrate strategic leadership rather than purely operational management. Key requirements include:

  • Strategic Authority: Evidence of influence over long-term organisational goals and decision-making.
  • Management of Managers: Typically overseeing other managers or supervisors (not just front-line staff).
  • Budgetary Control: Direct responsibility for managing and approving significant budgets or financial delegations.
  • Qualification: A Bachelor’s degree or higher (AQF Level 7+) in a relevant field is generally expected.
  • Post-Qualification Experience: Senior-level management experience, with emphasis on the strategic nature of the role.
  • Organisation Chart: A clear, signed chart showing your position, reporting lines, and team structure.
  • Detailed References: Employer letters that specifically describe your executive duties, level of authority, and achievements.
  • Identity Verification: High-quality colour scan of your valid passport and any name change documents.

The IML Assessment Process

Occupation Mapping and Self-Assessment

Select the correct ANZSCO code (e.g., Corporate General Manager – 111211). Review the relevant IML Fact Sheet to ensure your duties align with the senior management definition. In 2026, IML places strong emphasis on “delegated authority” the ability to make independent strategic decisions, including hiring, resource allocation, and financial commitments.

Strategic Document Compilation

Prepare a strong “Statement of Service” on company letterhead detailing your executive responsibilities, number of staff managed, and financial delegations. Include an organisation chart and detailed reference letters. All academic documents must be colour-scanned; non-English documents require NAATI-certified translations.

Lodgement and Verification Stage

Submit through the IML online portal. Once lodged, assessors may contact referees to verify your level of authority. If your application is complete and “decision-ready,” you will receive an outcome letter. A negative outcome due to insufficient seniority can be addressed through Review or Appeal with additional evidence.
