What is a Visitor Visa?

The Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) is a temporary visa for people who want to travel to Australia for a variety of reasons such as tourism, business, or visiting friends or family. The duration of stay in Australia under this visa can range from 3, 6, or 12 months, depending on the visa stream and the purpose of the visit. This visa is designed for applicants who are not eligible for the E-Visitor Visa or Electronic Travel Authority. However, if an individual is already in Australia on a valid Electronic Travel Authority visa and the visa is close to expiring, they can apply for an extension on the Visitor Visa Subclass 600. To be eligible, the applicant must demonstrate to the Department of Home Affairs that they are a genuine visitor and intend to stay in Australia temporarily. They will also need to show proof of sufficient financial funds to support their stay in Australia.

Subclass 600 Visa Streams

The Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) offers four streams that are available depending on the purpose of your visit, the duration of stay can vary and can range from 3, 6 or 12 months. The stream you need to apply for will depend on the purpose of your trip.

The Tourist stream of the Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) is intended for individuals who wish to travel to Australia as tourists, to visit family or friends or for a holiday. This visa can be applied for from within Australia and if granted, allows for a stay of up to 12 months. Alternatively, if you are outside of Australia, you can apply for a visa grant of 3, 6, or 12 months. The visa fee for this stream differs depending on whether you are applying from inside or outside of Australia. The fee for applying from within Australia is $365 AUD and from outside Australia is $145 AUD.
The Business Visitor Stream of Subclass 600 allows individuals to travel to Australia for business-related activities such as attending conferences, participating in business meetings, or negotiating contracts. However, it should be noted that the applicant is only permitted to conduct general business or employment services, but not to engage in business in Australia.

This visa is issued for a duration of 3 months and must be applied for while outside of Australia. The fee for this stream is $145 AUD.
The Sponsored Family Stream of Subclass 600 is intended for individuals who wish to travel to Australia to visit their family or friends. To be eligible, the applicant must have a sponsor in Australia and may be required to show the relationship between them and the sponsor. This visa also allows the applicant to study or train in Australia for a short course of up to 3 months.



The visa is issued for a duration of up to 12 months and must be applied for while outside of Australia. It is important to note that once the applicant arrives in Australia, they will not be able to apply for another visa. The application fee for this stream is $145 AUD, and the Department of Home Affairs may also require the sponsor to pay a security bond.
The Approved Destination Status Stream of Subclass 600 is intended for citizens of the Republic of China who wish to travel to Australia for tourism purposes. To be eligible, they must be travelling on a tour organized by an approved agent. The applicant must be outside of Australia when applying for this stream.

The duration of stay in Australia under this stream is not specified, and it is determined by the Department of Home Affairs and will be stated in the visa conditions.

Visa Duration

The Department of Home Affairs will inform you of the duration of your visa and the number of trips you are permitted to make. This could be either a single entry or multiple entries, depending on the visa granted. If the visa is valid, you may be allowed to travel multiple times but if it’s a single-entry visa, you will have to apply for a new visa to come back to Australia.

Visa Process and Requirements

It is important to have a passport before applying for a visa application because the passport number will be required in the application, and the same passport must be used when travelling to Australia.

When applying, you will need to provide proof of your claim by submitting documents such as passport details, a national identity card (if applicable), a letter from your sponsor, and accommodation details. If you are applying from a country with a high rate of visitor visa non-compliance, additional documents may be required to validate your application.
Meeting certain health and character requirements is a mandatory condition for this visa. It is advisable to obtain health insurance while travelling to Australia as medical expenses can be costly, especially in case of an emergency.

Restrictions on Subclass 600 Visa
