Designated Regional Area Postcode Checker Australia
Search an Australian postcode or common suburb to check whether it falls in a Category 2 or Category 3 designated regional area for skilled migration purposes.
Check a suburb or postcode in seconds
This checker follows the Department of Home Affairs designated regional area postcode categories. Enter a four-digit postcode for the most reliable result, or type a common suburb, town or regional centre name.
What is a designated regional area?
The Australian Government uses designated regional area postcodes to identify locations that may access regional migration incentives. The official definition includes Category 2 locations known as Cities and Major Regional Centres, and Category 3 locations known as Regional Centres and Other Regional Areas.
How this checker works
The tool checks your postcode against the Department of Home Affairs regional postcode ranges. If you enter a suburb name, the tool first matches it with an embedded suburb-to-postcode helper list, then checks the postcode category.
- Category 2: Cities and major regional centres.
- Category 3: Regional centres and other regional areas.
- Not listed: The postcode is not identified in the Home Affairs designated regional postcode table.

Frequently asked questions
Can a postcode result guarantee my visa eligibility?
No. A regional postcode result only confirms the location category. Visa eligibility still depends on your occupation, points, English, skills assessment, nomination pathway, employment evidence and current rules.
Is every suburb in a listed postcode automatically regional?
Usually the postcode is the key reference point, but some postcodes can cover several suburbs, delivery zones or locality names. Use the postcode as the main result and confirm your exact address before relying on it.
Should I search by suburb or postcode?
Postcode search is more reliable. Suburb names can be duplicated across Australia, so the tool shows the postcode and matching suburb names where available.
