The Tasmanian Skilled Migration State Nomination Program will reopen to new Registrations of Interest on 17 August 2026. The Migration Tasmania Application Gateway has moved to a new domain, and applicants should use the new Application Gateway. Those who previously bookmarked the portal should update their saved link. The portal will remain unavailable until the program opens.

The new program year introduces revised priority attributes, updated ranking rules, clearer policy guidance and a higher nomination application fee. Migration Tasmania will begin issuing invitations on 20 August 2026 and plans to publish invitation statistics every week.

Tasmania’s 2026–27 Nomination Allocation

Tasmania has received 2,050 skilled migration nomination places for the 2026–27 program year.

Visa categoryNomination places
Skilled Nominated visa Subclass 1901,250
Skilled Work Regional visa Subclass 491800
Total2,050

These figures represent the number of applicants Tasmania may nominate. They do not guarantee an invitation, nomination or visa approval.

Weekly Invitation Rounds

Migration Tasmania will issue invitations progressively throughout the year rather than using the full allocation at the beginning of the program.

Weekly updates will show:

  • The number of ROIs invited
  • The lowest scores invited
  • Remaining nomination places
  • The number of active ROIs on hand

Migration Tasmania will also publish an indicative nomination score based on the average of the lowest scores invited during the previous three months.

This score will be important during assessment. If an applicant cannot prove a claimed priority attribute and their revised score falls below the published three-month average, the nomination application will not be approved.

Applicants should therefore select only those attributes they can support with complete and reliable evidence.

Main Program Changes for 2026–27

Migration Tasmania has revised the program after reviewing previous results and stakeholder feedback.

The key changes include:

  • Clearer wording for priority attributes
  • Greater recognition for longer employment in Tasmania
  • More score differentiation based on employment duration
  • Updated guidance for leave and breaks between jobs
  • Revised income-related attributes
  • A new TSE Gold requirement of at least 30 hours per week in one job
  • New conditions for selected occupations
  • A higher nomination application fee

The changes are designed to make the ranking process clearer and better recognise applicants who have made a longer and more stable contribution to Tasmania.

Updated TSE Gold Requirement

The Tasmanian Skilled Employment Gold priority attribute now requires applicants to work at least 30 hours per week in one job.

Hours from different jobs cannot be combined to meet this requirement, even where the applicant’s total weekly working hours exceed 30.

Applicants should confirm that at least one position independently meets the required weekly hours.

Revised Income Attributes

Income-based priority attributes have been updated to reflect:

  • Australian median earnings
  • Australian average earnings
  • The Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold

The existing Priority Income Level remains unchanged at:

  • $57,000 per year, or
  • $28.85 per hour

Salary claims should be consistent across employment contracts, payslips, bank statements and employer records.

Leave and Employment Gaps

The updated guidance provides more detail on how leave periods and breaks between jobs may affect employment-related priority attributes.

Applicants relying on Tasmanian employment should accurately record:

  • Employment start and end dates
  • Weekly working hours
  • Paid or unpaid leave
  • Gaps between employers
  • Changes in employment arrangements

Incorrectly calculating the length or continuity of employment may affect the ROI score.

Additional Conditions for Selected Occupations

Additional employment conditions apply to two occupation categories:

1. Massage Therapists

Employment must generally be in a health, allied health, aged care or disability care setting. Applicants must also hold a relevant skills assessment and a health fund provider number issued in their own name.

2. Motor Mechanics/Service Technicians

Motor mechanic employment must generally be with a business whose main activity is vehicle repair. Employment with a used-vehicle business may not qualify unless it is an authorised manufacturer dealership and the applicant mainly repairs that manufacturer’s vehicles. Service technician work must primarily involve servicing vehicles at an authorised dealership. Vehicle sales and preparation duties will not qualify.

Applicants should review the detailed requirements before claiming a related priority attribute.

Updated Nomination Application Fee

There is still no charge to submit an ROI.

However, applicants invited to lodge a formal nomination application must pay:

  • $387 excluding GST, or
  • $425.70 including GST

The fee applies at the nomination application stage, not when submitting the initial ROI.

Existing ROI Holders

Applicants who submitted an ROI within the previous six months may consider withdrawing it and lodging a new ROI after the program reopens.

The revised priority attributes and ranking scores may improve the position of applicants with longer employment, stronger income or other qualifying circumstances.

Before replacing an ROI, applicants should compare their score under the old and new settings and ensure that all updated claims can be documented.

No Subclass 491 Overseas Profile Invitations

Migration Tasmania does not plan to issue invitations under the Subclass 491 Overseas Skilled Occupation Profiles – Invitation Only Pathway during 2026–27.

This pathway was intended for overseas applicants without a Tasmanian job offer who had skills considered valuable to the state.

The decision does not close every option for overseas applicants.

Overseas health and teaching professionals may still be eligible for Subclass 190 nomination through the Overseas Applicant – Health or Education Sector Job Offer Pathway where they secure qualifying employment with a Tasmanian health provider or school.

Tasmania Skilled Migration Webinar

Migration Tasmania will hold an online webinar covering the new program settings.

Date: Thursday, 13 August 2026

Time: 11:00 am to 12:00 pm AEST

Registration: Not required

Topics will include nomination allocations, program priorities, ranking changes, policy updates, overseas applicant requirements and audience questions.

What Applicants Should Do Before the Program Opens

Applicants preparing for Tasmania nomination should:

  1. Confirm the correct Subclass 190 or 491 pathway.
  2. Review the new priority attributes and scores.
  3. Check that their SkillSelect EOI is accurate.
  4. Confirm the validity of their skills assessment and English result.
  5. Review employment hours, income, leave and employment gaps.
  6. Gather evidence supporting every selected attribute.
  7. Check whether occupation-specific conditions apply.

Key Takeaways

Tasmania’s 2026–27 skilled migration program will open on 17 August 2026, with weekly invitations starting on 20 August 2026.

The state has received 2,050 nomination places, but the revised ranking system places greater importance on stable employment, accurate scoring and supporting evidence.

Applicants should review the complete program settings before submitting an ROI and avoid claiming any priority attribute they cannot fully demonstrate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why has Migration Tasmania changed the priority attributes?

The changes were introduced after applicants and stakeholders reported confusion about salary thresholds, employment periods and selecting the correct attributes. The revised system is intended to recognise longer and more stable contributions to Tasmania more clearly.

Can I compare my score under the old and new settings?

Yes. Migration Tasmania has retained the 2025–26 priority attributes and scores for comparison. Applicants can calculate their position under both systems before deciding whether to replace an existing ROI.

Can hours from different jobs be combined for the TSE Gold attribute?

No. The updated TSE Gold attribute requires at least 30 hours of work per week in one eligible job. Hours from several positions cannot be combined to satisfy this requirement.

Why are no Subclass 491 Overseas Skilled Occupation Profile invitations planned?

Migration Tasmania has linked this decision to the Australian Government’s priority processing arrangements for visa applicants who are already in Australia. The pause applies specifically to this invitation-only offshore pathway.

Does the published three-month score guarantee nomination approval?

No. The published figure is an assessment benchmark based on the average of the lowest scores invited during the previous three months. Applicants must still meet all pathway requirements and prove every priority attribute claimed in their ROI.
