Specified Work for a Second or Third Visa

Most applicants must complete eligible specified work before applying for another Working Holiday visa.

Second visa

3 months / 88 days

At least 3 months or 88 calendar days of specified work.

Third visa

6 months / 179 days

At least 6 months or 179 calendar days of specified work completed during the second Working Holiday visa.

Specified work categories

Eligible specified work may include:

These work categories may be relevant when meeting the specified work requirement for a second or third Working Holiday visa.

  • Plant and animal cultivation
  • Fishing and pearling
  • Tree farming and felling
  • Mining
  • Construction
  • Tourism and hospitality in eligible areas
  • Approved bushfire or natural-disaster recovery work

The work must meet the approved industry, location, duties, employment period and payment requirements. A job does not qualify only because it is located in regional Australia.

How Are the 88 Days Counted?

The calculation depends on your employment arrangement.

Full-Time Work

If you work the normal full-time pattern for the industry over three continuous calendar months, normal weekends or rest days during that period may count.

Part-Time or Casual Work

You may need to work over a longer period to complete the equivalent number of normal full-time days or shifts.

Important Rules

  • Work from different employers can be combined.
  • Work does not need to be continuous.
  • Two shifts in one day count as one day.
  • Paid leave may count; unpaid days generally do not.
  • The minimum period is 3 months for a second visa and 6 months for a third visa.

Home Affairs assesses whether you completed the equivalent number of normal workdays or shifts for the relevant industry and role.

Evidence You Should Keep

Keep clear employment records from the beginning, including:

  • Employment contract
  • Payslips
  • Bank statements showing wage payments
  • Timesheets or rosters
  • Employer ABN and legal business name
  • Workplace address and postcode
  • Tax income statements
  • Superannuation records
  • Position description
  • Employer reference
  • Piece-rate agreement where applicable

An employer’s statement that the work qualifies is not enough. The Department may verify the employer, duties, dates, location and payment records.

Visa Conditions

Six-Month Employer Limit

Condition 8547 generally limits work with the same employer to six months.

You may be able to work longer where an exemption applies or written permission is granted. Where permission is required, the request must be submitted before the initial six-month period ends.

Four-Month Study Limit

Condition 8548 generally limits study or training to four months during each Working Holiday visa.

The limit applies separately to each first, second or third visa.

Grant of Another Visa

If another Australian visa is granted while you hold a Working Holiday visa, the Subclass 417 visa may cease. This may affect your work rights and eligibility for another Working Holiday visa.

Working Holiday Visa Cost

The current government charges are:

ApplicationGovernment charge
First Working Holiday visaAUD840
Second Working Holiday visaAUD1,000
Third Working Holiday visaAUD1,000

Other possible costs include health examinations, police certificates, biometrics, translations, insurance and professional assistance.

Government charges can change. Check the current amount in ImmiAccount or through the Home Affairs Visa Pricing Estimator before paying.

Processing Time

There is no guaranteed processing time for a Subclass 417 visa.

Processing may take longer where:

  • Documents are incomplete
  • Financial evidence is unclear
  • Health or character checks are required
  • Previous immigration issues need to be reviewed
  • Specified work requires verification
  • The Department requests further information

Home Affairs is currently receiving a high volume of Working Holiday Maker applications. Applicants should not book travel until they receive written confirmation that the visa has been granted.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Do the Subclass 417 and Subclass 462 Visas Differ?

Both visas allow eligible young people to travel and work temporarily in Australia, but they are available to different passport holders. Subclass 462 may also involve education, English, government support, annual cap or ballot requirements. Your passport determines which visa you can apply for.

When does the 12-month visa period begin?

For a first Working Holiday visa, the stay period generally begins when you first enter Australia. Once the visa begins, time spent outside Australia does not normally extend its expiry date.

Do I need health insurance?

Private health insurance is strongly recommended because you may be responsible for medical and hospital expenses in Australia. Some passport holders may have limited access to Medicare under a reciprocal healthcare agreement, but this may not cover every service or cost.

Can specified work completed on a bridging visa count?

It may count in limited circumstances where the bridging visa followed an eligible first or second Working Holiday visa while the person was waiting for the next Working Holiday visa decision. Work completed on an unrelated Student visa, bridging visa or other visa will generally not count.

Can my partner travel with me?

Your partner cannot be included in your Subclass 417 application. They must apply for and hold their own suitable visa. Dependent children cannot accompany you during your Working Holiday stay.
