Entry Requirements

Admission requirements depend on the degree, previous qualification and country of education.

01

Undergraduate Entry

Applicants generally need a recognised secondary qualification comparable to Australian Year 12 and must meet the academic standard set for their chosen degree.

Country-specific entry requirements are used, and some programs also have prerequisite subjects or additional selection criteria.

02

Postgraduate Entry

Postgraduate applicants normally need a recognised bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification.

The previous discipline and required academic result vary between programs. For example, the Master of Professional Accounting accepts several recognised tertiary-entry pathways and does not require applicants to already hold an accounting degree.

03

English Language Requirements

Accepted English evidence includes major tests such as:

  • IELTS Academic
  • PTE Academic
  • TOEFL iBT
  • Cambridge English
  • OET for relevant courses
  • recognised previous study in English in certain circumstances

There is no single English score across every degree. Requirements are course-specific, and professional programs can have higher overall or component requirements.

For eligible international students

Scholarships for International Students

Undergraduate

University Excellence Scholarship

Eligible international students can access substantial tuition scholarships. For students commencing from 2027, the University Excellence Scholarship can provide a 30% tuition fee reduction for eligible undergraduate courses. There is no separate scholarship application for eligible students, although course exclusions and academic criteria apply.

Postgraduate

Postgraduate Academic Excellence Scholarship

Eligible coursework master's students may also qualify for the Postgraduate Academic Excellence Scholarship, which currently offers a 30% tuition reduction for eligible programs. The published criteria include strong previous academic performance, with some professional degrees excluded.

Scholarship rules can change by commencement year, so eligibility should be checked against the selected course and intake rather than assuming the same offer applies every year.

04

Regional Locations

Not every degree is available at every location, so the course should be checked before choosing a campus.

2026 calendar reference

Intakes

The university uses more than one academic calendar.

Many degrees follow the main Autumn and Spring sessions, while some postgraduate programs operate under trimesters.

Key 2026 commencements included:

  • 01 Autumn: 2 March
  • 02 Spring: 27 July
  • 03 Trimester 1: 9 February
  • 04 Trimester 2: 18 May
  • 05 Trimester 3: 24 August

Not every program is offered in every study period, so the actual commencement depends on the course.

Global recognition · QS 2027

Ranking

In the QS World University Rankings 2027, UOW was ranked 195th globally and 13th in Australia. It also placed 71st globally for citations per faculty, reflecting the international reach of its research.

The university also sits within the world's top 250 in several other major global ranking systems. Rankings change from year to year, so they are best read alongside the ranking body and edition rather than treated as permanent positions.

Learning beyond the classroom

Practical Learning

Professional accreditation is important across several fields. The School of Business holds AACSB accreditation, relevant engineering programs meet professional requirements associated with Engineers Australia, and professional degrees such as nursing include recognised clinical and workplace preparation.

Practical learning varies by discipline. Business students can access internship opportunities, engineering students complete professional experience, while nursing and other health-related courses use structured workplace placements.

Previous learning and qualifications

Credit for Previous Study

Students with previous university, TAFE, college or relevant professional learning may be able to request Credit for Prior Learning (CPL).

Both formal qualifications and certain forms of relevant professional learning can be considered. Future students can request a credit assessment as part of the admission application, which is generally the best time to deal with it.

Approved credit can reduce the number of subjects, overall duration and potentially the total tuition cost. For international students, substantial credit can also change the study period recorded on the CoE.

Life on and around campus

University Life & Accommodation

The Wollongong campus offers a genuine university environment with study spaces, food outlets, sporting facilities, green areas and a large student community.

Students who want to live close to campus can apply for residences including:

UOW student residences

  • Kooloobong Village
  • Bangalay
  • Campus East
  • International House
  • Graduate House

Options range from catered residences to self-contained and self-catered accommodation. Campus East is close to the beach, while Kooloobong Village is located on the main campus.

Accommodation prices and availability change by year and residence, so students should apply early rather than assume a place will automatically be available.

Common application questions

Frequently Asked Questions

I received a conditional offer. Does that mean my place is confirmed?

Not yet. Conditions might relate to finishing your current qualification, meeting the English requirement, supplying certified documents or completing another admission requirement. Those conditions need to be cleared before the offer can be fully accepted.

I found different UOW acceptance rates online. Which one should I rely on?

A general percentage is not a useful way to judge your own chances. Admission is assessed against the requirements of the specific course and your qualification background. A student's real question should be whether their academic result, English evidence and any prerequisites meet the criteria for the degree they want to enter.

Can I change my degree after receiving an offer?

Possibly, but do it before accepting and paying for a course you no longer intend to study. A new degree can have different entry requirements, fees, scholarship conditions, campus availability or intake dates, so the application may need to be reassessed.

Will changing my degree affect my scholarship?

It can. Current scholarship terms specifically state that students who transfer courses are not guaranteed continuation of the scholarship. Eligibility is reassessed against the conditions applying to the new course.

I do not meet direct university entry. Do I still have an option?

Potentially. UOW College Australia provides English and academic pathway programs that can lead toward university study. It should be treated as a separate pathway provider with its own entry requirements, fees and enrolment conditions rather than being confused with direct degree admission.

What happens if I cannot start on the date in my offer?

You may be able to request a deferral, depending on the course. A deferral can also change tuition, scholarships and the CoE for the later intake. The university states that approved deferrals result in a new offer, and updated fees may apply.

I have already studied in Australia. Can that affect my new application?

Yes. Previous tertiary study may support admission or credit, but it can also matter where you are changing providers, changing study level or explaining your new course choice. Previous transcripts and subject information should be reviewed before the new application is lodged.

What happens if my Student Visa is refused after I have accepted my place?

University admission and Student Visa approval are separate decisions. The refusal should be reviewed before another visa application is made. The reasons for refusal may affect what should happen next, and any tuition already paid will need to be dealt with under the applicable refund arrangements.

Start Your Application

A large university gives students plenty of choice, but that also makes it easier to choose a course, campus or pathway that does not fit the rest of the profile.

Think Higher can help you assess the admission position first, manage the application and offer process, and then deal with the Student Visa stage separately where required.
