NT 190 vs 491: What Changes?
For applicants already established in the Territory, residence and employment requirements are different.

Employment
Employment generally needs to continue for at least another 12 months and meet the current NT requirements. Full-time employment for nomination purposes is generally 35 hours per week.
Federal Requirements
Applicants also need to satisfy relevant federal requirements such as age, English, points and a valid skills assessment.
65 Points Does Not Guarantee Nomination
Meeting the minimum skilled migration points threshold is only one part of the assessment.
The NT can also consider your occupation, employment, Territory connection, evidence and ability to establish yourself in the Northern Territory. Applicants accepting NT nomination also commit to living and working in the Territory for at least three years after visa grant.
Location Matters
Darwin Is Regional, but Greater Darwin Can Still Matter
Federally, Darwin is regional Australia. However, some NT nomination rules distinguish Greater Darwin from regional and remote locations elsewhere in the Territory.
Greater Darwin includes areas such as Darwin, Palmerston and Litchfield, while certain exceptional employment provisions can apply specifically outside Greater Darwin.
This means the actual location of employment can still affect an NT strategy even though the entire Territory is federally classified as regional.

Studied in Darwin? Graduate Pathways Need More Than a Qualification
Eligible NT graduates generally need to complete two academic years or four semesters of full-time study in the Northern Territory to access the NT Graduate stream.
Studying alone is not enough.
Depending on the pathway, NT nomination can also require:
- Post-study NT residence
- Relevant employment or job offer
- Genuine efforts to secure skilled work
- Temporary Graduate visa eligibility
- Continued commitment to the Territory
A Darwin qualification does not automatically produce a 485 visa, NT nomination, 190, 491 or permanent residency.

NT DAMA Is Not a Direct Visa
A worker cannot independently apply for DAMA simply because their occupation appears on the list.
An eligible NT employer must drive the process.
